Test Drive Tips

A test drive is your best chance to evaluate a vehicle before buying. Use this guide to make every minute count.

Before the Drive

  • Inspect the exterior for dents, scratches, and rust
  • Check tire condition and tread depth
  • Open and close all doors, trunk, and hood
  • Adjust mirrors and seat to your driving position
  • Familiarize yourself with the controls and infotainment

During the Drive

  • Start the engine cold and listen for unusual sounds
  • Test acceleration — does it respond smoothly?
  • Brake firmly — does it stop straight without pulling?
  • Turn the steering wheel fully in both directions
  • Drive over bumps to check the suspension
  • Test on the highway for vibrations at 60+ mph
  • Try parking in a tight spot for maneuverability

Comfort & Visibility

  • Check headroom and legroom for front and rear seats
  • Test visibility from all angles, including blind spots
  • Run the A/C and heater — do they work quickly?
  • Test the audio system at different volumes
  • Check how much road noise enters the cabin

Questions to Ask

  • What is the vehicle's service and accident history?
  • Is there remaining factory warranty coverage?
  • What is the out-the-door price including all fees?
  • Are there any known issues or pending recalls?
  • What financing options are available?
  • Can I take it for an independent inspection?

Pro Tips

  • Drive at least 2-3 different vehicles to compare the experience
  • Bring a trusted friend or family member for a second opinion
  • Test during the day for best visibility of the vehicle's condition
  • Try to drive the exact car you'd buy, not just a similar one
  • Take your time — a good test drive is at least 20-30 minutes
